We are excited to let you know that while our journey to completing our Treaty of Waitangi Settlement continues, we are looking to move things along quickly in the next few months. With news of the next parliamentary elections set to take place on 19 September, we are hoping to have our settlement finalised before this.
As many of you will remember, we had the first of three readings of our Bill on 19 September in Wellington. This was a hugely successful day, a culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice for many of our whānau and tūpuna.
Following on from the first reading, we had the Māori Select Committee hearing in Matamata on 9 December where a panel of MPs from across Aotearoa sat and heard about concerns from ourselves and other whānau about the legislation process involved in our Treaty Settlement.
We are expecting its findings to be released by the end of February and if the recommendations are favourable, the second reading of our Bill will be arranged.
This means the third and final reading of our bill will be moved along swiftly, after which we receive all of the assets and relationships negotiated in our settlement. This will mark the end of the settlement journey and the beginning of a bright future ahead.
As usual, we will keep you posted as we progress as we would love to have as many whānau as possible join us in Wellington at parliament for the third reading whenever that may be.
Please feel free to contact us with any enquiries.
