Reaching a Deed of Settlement

On 14 December, 2018, Ngāti Hinerangi Trust initialled a Deed of Settlement. After years of negotiation between Ngāti Hinerangi Trust and the Crown, both parties had finally come to an agreement about a redress package to offer to the people of Ngāti Hinerangi.

The initialling was held at the Hamilton Airport Hotel with the inclusion of kaumatua, kuia and the wider whānau who were able to initial the Deed, too.

Initialling is step five of six when it comes to completing our Treaty Settlement journey. Now that the Trust has accepted the package, it must now present it to iwi members who will vote to support or disagree with the package that has been negotiated.

Within the Deed, we see the return of lands, the offer to purchase lands for future financial gain and the offer of $8.1million as well as a Cultural Revitalisation Fund, relationship agreements and the opportunity to purchase land when they are no longer needed by the Crown, such as schools.

This is a hugely significant step in the Treaty Settlement Process and all whānau are urged to read the Deed below and vote when you receive your voting pack in the post.
